It’s never too late to go back to school
It’s never too late to go back to school. Whether it’s to change careers, obtain certifications or complete high school, a wide range of services are available on the Lower North Shore and Anticosti Island for guidance counseling.
Jean-François Rodrigue has been one of the Guidance Counselors at the Centre de services scolaire du Littoral for over six years. He assists both young students and adults in making an informed career choice.
“There are many reasons why adults change careers. It could be the desire to take on new challenges or a loss of job satisfaction,” he explains.
Its role goes well beyond the standard orientation survey. A series of factors are considered, such as the length of the program, costs and prerequisites, but also more personal factors such as the support of the family in the process and previous experiences of the years spent in school.
As Jean-François Rodrigue stresses, it is very important to seriously consider all these elements to successfully return to school.
Fortunately, the offer of guidance counseling services is quite complete on the Lower North Shore and Anticosti Island. The counselors can offer personalized support to each person, and this free thanks to the Reception, referral, counselling, and support services (SARCA in French).
Distance Learning
“With the COVID-19 pandemic, distance education has become more the norm than the exception,” observes Jean-François Rodrigue. This is a considerable advantage for learners in remote areas such as the Lower North Shore and the Minganie.
“You can now attend open houses virtually and there are programs of study that are now offered in distance learning mode.”
Furthermore, most of the college prerequisite courses can be completed in the communities of the Lower North Shore and Anticosti Island through Adult Education services.
Various financial aid programs that can help facilitate a return to school. One of them is the Perspective Québec bursary program (https://www.quebec.ca/education/aide-financiere-aux-etudes/bourses-perspective) recently set up by the Quebec government, which targets several high-demand fields and provides up to $9,000 for a college program and $15,000 for a university program. This program is available in addition to the existing Quebec loans and bursaries program (http://www.afe.gouv.qc.ca/en/all-forms/detail/application-for-financial-assistance-loans-and-bursaries-program ).
The application deadline is fast approaching, but it’s not too late for your return to college or university. For the Fall 2022 semester, applications can be submitted until March 1st and it is still possible to make an appointment with a guidance counselor at the Centre de services scolaire du Littoral to be guided in your decision and to learn about the prerequisites to complete.
For other types of Adult General Education and Vocational Training programs and services it is possible to register throughout the year, so don’t wait!
